Finding A Beginner Acoustic Guitar

The primary choice you have to make when purchasing a beginner acoustic guitar is deciding what kind of music you’re going to play. A nylon-string classical guitar is best suited for playing classical, Latin and some kinds of folk and pop music. A steel-string guitar works best for playing rock, country, and some pop and folk music. It’s up to you to play the various kinds in order to decide the sound you want for your beginner acoustic guitar.

Most teachers will recommend purchasing nylon guitar strings for the person just learning to play as they are a little easier on the fingers. However, this may not be a good idea if the student wants to learn to be a rock star or if they don’t care for the classical style music, as the nylon string will never sound just right.

If you want to learn to play music made by steel strings then the obvious choice is a steel-string guitar. Yes, your fingers are going to hurt for some time, but you’ll develop calluses after a couple of months of regular practice. The same is true if you wish to play classical guitar music. Don’t be persuaded to get a steel-string guitar is all you want to play is classical music.

A classic guitar is considered classic because the dimensions are similar. So, keep that in mind if that’s the type of guitar you are in the market for. Classical guitars have a classical sound, with smaller bodies and wider fingerboards, and they will still differ in both feeling and tone. Before deciding which beginner acoustic guitar to purchase, try several. A great beginner acoustic guitar for the person just starting out would be the steel six-string dreadnought guitar. These types of guitars vary only a small amount in terms of size and just might have the tone that beginner players will really like.

The tone of the beginner acoustic guitar is determined by the type of wood it is made from. A spruce top is the most common for a beginner acoustic guitar. A solid top is better than a two-piece top, because it is more durable. Be sure to keep an eye out for that. Mahogany, rosewood, or spruce are probably the options you will find for the back and sides. A mahogany back and sides will provide a lighter tone. So, if that’s what you’re looking for, mahogany is your best option. Rosewood provides a heavier tone when it is used for the back and sides.

When buying a beginner acoustic guitar, another thing you want is a fairly low action. The “action” is the term for the area between the neck and the strings. An action that is too high can slow your progress by shifting your focus and causing you to lose your concentration.

While you’re out purchasing a beginner acoustic guitar, you’ll want to pick up a decent electronic tuner at the same time. You haven’t had enough experience yet to develop the ear of an expert. If you can spend less time in tuning your new guitar, you’ll have that much more time for practicing on it and actually playing.
